Parentage: This week’s Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Valya Craig x Cym. canaliculatum

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

This week’s Orchid Wise Orchid of the Week was hybridised and registered by Western Orchids in South Australia. Over time, I have seen numerous cultivars of this plant in flower in the Western Orchids shade house. Although I have a seedling myself, it has yet to bloom for me—fingers crossed for next season!

Compared to the other seedlings I have seen flower, the one pictured above stands out as particularly unique. Not only does it look quite different to the others, but it also shows the least influence from Cym. canaliculatum. One impressive feature of this seedling is the abundance of large, intermediate-sized flowers on the spike. Additionally, the flower’s labellum and striking yellow calli add to its distinctive appeal.

Moreover, the spike had an excellent flower count. However, the flower spacing appeared somewhat crowded, which made the overall presentation feel a bit busy. That said, the apricot colour provided a beautiful contrast against the foliage, making the flower visually striking and quite appealing. It really did stand up and say ‘look at me’!

For anyone in Australia looking to obtain a seedling or two, I’m sure Western Orchids would be able to sort you out with some.

Tracing this plant’s original species ancestors using Orchid Roots, Cym. canaliculatum, Cym. insigne and Cym. lowianum are the major contributors with Cym. canaliculatum alone making up 50% of this plant!
