Back to some breeding that contains a good deal of species and primary hybrid influence this week!
Bred by Andy Easton from New Horizon Orchids, this plant has already been used to go a step further with Andy already flowering its progeny! He hasn’t wasted any time at all! Two progeny already registered and no doubt more to come…
A very interesting labellum!
One of the parents, Cym. Parish Laird, is warmth tolerant giving Cym. Annie Laurie a good chance of being the same too. The lip markings are very interesting and are obviously the showpiece of this flower. The majority influence coming from Cym. sanderae.
There is a lot of recent species influence in this plant and the Cym. lowianum in the background will give the plant some hardiness but the Cym species plants Cym. sanderae and Cym. devonianum make up half of Cym. Annie Laurie on their own! The Cym. devonianum influence has reduced the size of this plant to something more manageable and likewise with the flower size.
Maybe not a plant for my collection given my focus on species and primary hybrid plants, however I’d absolutely love to see this plant with a bunch of spikes proudly displayed.
I haven’t seen any of the seedling variations from this cross, but I think it would be an interesting exercise. If I manage to obtain some from Andy I will update this post with new images. This image was supplied by Andy Easton’s Facebook post.
Tracing this plant’s original species ancestors using Orchid Roots, Cym. sanderae, Cym. lowianum and Cym. devonianum are the major species contributors of this plant!
