The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Brand new breeding this week! Just registered and looking very interesting indeed for those who like yellows and lots and lots of small intermediate flowers.
Bred, grown and flowered by George Hatfield in California, Cym. Manny Cruz is a really appealing flower. George is a very experienced commercial grower and breeder and has given us some lovely plants over the years.
The only potential shortfall with Cym. Manny Cruz may be the fact it is a triploid (3N). But not all triploids are the end of the line. And commercial breeders aren’t opposed to growing them as long as they are commercially viable and hobbyist growers deem it desirable to own. Some very fine plants have turned out to be triploids, but breeders obviously prefer tetraploids (4N’s) for the ease of breeding.
The seedling variety as shown in the photos is pretty cool and no doubt this one will be seen all over in the future!
Cym. canaliculatum will give this cross a good dose of heat and intermittent water tolerance, and having Cym. devonianum and Cym. canaliculatum in the makeup has obviously brought the plant and flower size down to something more manageable these days.
Cym. Janis Elaine Hoenig has been around for about 15 years now, but has only been used in six new registrations, including Cym. Wolfman Jack, however, has produced some very interesting and eye catching labellum markings, and you need to see them! Some of them I think are very cool!

Tracing this plant’s original species ancestors using Orchid Roots, Cym. canaliculatum, Cym. devonianum and Cym. insigne are the major species contributors of this plant!
