The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Cym. Devon Spectrum is the Primary Hybrid of Cym. tracyanum x Cym. devonianum, which has only been used three times as a registered parent. And Cym. Sprinkles is one of those progeny.
We all love spots and this flower is nicely balanced in colour and lip marking. There looks to be quite a lot of Cym. Solana Beach in this flower, which was always a very attractive flower to begin with. It is definitely the dominant parent, however the pendulous spike means Cym. Solana Beach didn’t have it all its own way!
In the background of Cym. Solana Beach we can find Cym. Alexanderi and Cym. Pearl, two very well known vintage Cyms.
I’m always curious to know what breeders are thinking when they decide to cross two plants…..but the result here is quite pretty.
The above image is courtesy of Tam Tran’s Facebook post. And to illustrate the variety in seedlings, here is another Cym. Sprinkles seedling found on the Orchid Board. Certainly not nearly as attractive for me, however some nice pastel colour in this one.
Tracing this plant’s original species ancestors using Orchid Roots, Cym. tracyanum, Cym. devonianum and Cym. erythrostylum are the major species contributors of this plant!
