The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Brand new breeding this week from Joe Santy of Santy Orchids in California, and what a lip Cym. Sensational Dream displays! Big and bold and beautiful!
Joe Santy has been busy in 2025, registering 11 new hybrids this year already and we are only half way through! Cym. Sensational Dream is one of the better ones I have seen from this year’s list so far. A very bright burnt orange two-tone colour is a spectacular colour in the sunlight and always stands out on the show bench.
A lot of the red colour we get in today’s Cymbidium orchids are from Cym. Ceres, a Primary Hybrid cross of Cym. i’ansonii and Cym. insigne. Cym Sensation is also an important red breeder and can be found further along the family tree from Cym. Ceres. Also further back in the family tree are Cym. Alexanderi and Cym. Veitchii, very well known plants to most.
Tracing this plant’s original species ancestors using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum and Cym. i’ansonii are the major species contributors of this plant!
