The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Bryants Orchids deliver another standout here, with a strong splash of Cym. Lunar Blaze influence clearly visible on the labellum of this week’s Cymbidium Orchid of the Week. As always, Bryants Orchids present big, bold, and roundly shaped flowers—and this one fits the bill perfectly.
Cym. Flaming Vulcan continues to produce a wide variety of striking cultivars, and I count this parent among my favourite modern hybrids for its deep, rich colour. Already we have 25 registered progeny from Cym. Flaming Vulcan. proving its value as a very productive parent, and no doubt a lot more are yet to come.
The flower on Cym. Barry Baker displays a consistent, vibrant colour that really draws the eye. The photo above captures it just before the bloom fully opened, so the shape will settle and flatten out slightly, reducing the cupped look as it matures.
Breeders don’t waste time putting Bryants hybrids to use. Already, two progeny of Cym. Barry Baker have been registered, showing just how much breeders and hobbyists value this line in modern breeding programs. And just in the last few weeks I have seen half a dozen or so Barry Baker seedlings that look pretty good. So watch this space!
