The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
We return home to South Australia for this week’s Cymbidium Orchid of the Week, where local breeders and suppliers, 3 Amigos Orchids, have delivered a striking large orange standard featuring tall, upright spikes.
Already, several cultivars from this grex are showing excellent promise. In fact, Cym. Amigos Magic ‘Blood Orange’ took out both Grand Champion and Champion Seedling at the 2022 Cymbidium Orchid Club of South Australia Winter Show—an impressive achievement that highlights the quality of this line.
When examining the parentage, it quickly becomes clear why this cross showed such strong potential from the beginning. Notably, well-regarded plants like Cym. Atlantic Crossing and Cym. Eight Carat feature among its grandparents, providing a solid genetic foundation. In addition, having grown Cym. Prized in my own collection, I can fully appreciate why it was chosen for this breeding. It’s a vibrant plant with a bold, unmistakably wide lip that makes a lasting impression. Cym. Amigos Magic has clearly inherited that broader lip from Prized, however the distinctive markings appear to come more directly from the other parent, Cym. Oriental Magic.
The 3 Amigos are highly active in the Australian breeding scene.
They’re also contributing fresh diversity to the modern hybrid landscape. And that is something we definitely need more of. Being based locally, I’ve been fortunate enough to preview some of their upcoming seedlings, and I can say with confidence: there are some very exciting flowers on the horizon.
For anyone looking to modernise a collection or expand a prize winning collection, I’d definitely recommend checking them out. Their work speaks for itself.
