This weeks Orchid of the week is… Cym. Regal Flames ‘Queen of Hearts’
Parentage: This is a cross between Cym. Wyong Flame × Cym. Alexandra’s Flame
Registered: 2010
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This week’s Orchid of the Week is a brilliant bold red bred from good, popular parents. Although not part of my collection currently, I would welcome one just for the colour it provides! It hasn’t been used a great deal in breeding so far, but with these parents, a grandparent like Cym. Khan Flame, and Cym. Sensation in the background, there is bound to be some potential there.
Cym. Regal Flames has been awarded several times at orchid shows around Australia, so is good performer on the showbench. It is a great addition to the collection of any grower, and it is also featured in our article 6 Red Cymbidium Orchid Hybrids to Get Your Collection Started!
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum and Cym. eburneum are the major contributors present in the distant background.
This image borrowed from Wain’s Orchids in Victoria. They may have some available for sale, as may Barrita Orchids, but this orchid is getting increasingly hard to get hold of. And check out our Day in the Life article from Wain’s Orchids for more information about them, and a few other plants they have produced and grow.
