This weeks Orchid of the week is… Cym. Valley Olympic ‘Pink Perfection’
Parentage: Cymbidium Valley Winter × Cymbidium President Gorbachev
Registered: 2004
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This Cymbidium plant is also one from my own private collection, obtained directly from the breeder, Valley Orchids. This photo is from my 2022 flowering. Both parents, Cym. Valley Winter and Cym. President Gorbachev were also bred by Valley Orchids.
There were several nice flowerings from the Valley Olympic line. ‘Pink Perfection’ was joined by ‘Rose’ and ‘Prolific’ as the standouts and were good growers. I had both Pink Perfection’ and ‘Rose’ until I lost ‘Rose’ a few years ago. ‘Pink Perfection’ flowers very freely on upright spikes and when shown with multiple spikes, it does make a statement!
T’his particular plant, ‘Pink Perfection’, has been extensively cloned over the years and is in wide distribution, and is very popular. It has also been celebrated with two Awards of Merit.
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne and Cym. lowianum are the main contributors present in the distant background, as well as a couple of more well known, more recent parents.
