Orchid of the Week

This week’s Orchid of the week is… Cym. Templestowe’s Charm

Parentage: This is a cross between Cym. Akebono × Cym. Valley Olympic

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

This week we look at an awarded Cymbidium cross, Cym. Templestowe’s Charm, from David Wain, of Wain’s Orchids.

David won an Award of Merit from the Australian Orchid Council in 2004 with Cym. Valley Olympic ‘Pink Perfection’. And Cym. Akebono has also twice been awarded a Highly Commended Certificate from the Australian Orchid Council (1986 and 1990). So I guess crossing them was a no brainer. And it’s no surprise that both of these plants turned out to be great parents, and a result worthy of great things.

Cym. Valley Olympic ‘Pink Perfection’ is also a previous Orchid of the Week here at Orchid Wise.

David has created a cracking pink Cymbidium orchid cross here with Cym. Templestowe’s Charm ‘Julie’ and Cym. Templestowe’s Charm ‘Nicole’ the standout varietals, and this cross is still one of David’s favourites.

David received an Award of Merit from the AOC in 2017 with ‘Julie’ and a Highly Commended Certificate from the AOC with ‘Nicole’ in the same year. A pretty good effort in anyone’s book!

This is a Cym. that will light up your collection with it’s beautiful shade of pink.

These images were taken by me inside the Wain’s Orchids grow house in August 2023 with multiple plants in flower when I was there, and I have to say, they looked amazing!

Cym. Templestowe’s Charm is still available for purchase, so contact Wain’s Orchids to get your hands on a showbench winner!

Looking back at the original species ancestors of Cym. Templestowe’s Charm using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne and Cym. lowianum are the major other contributors present in the distant background with a little Cym. eburneum thrown in too.
