Orchid of the Week

This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Yowie Rose ‘Vulcan”

Orchid of the Week - Cym. Yowie Rose ‘Vulcan’
Orchid of the Week – Cym. Yowie Rose ‘Vulcan’

Parentage: This is a cross between Cym. Lancashire Rose × Cym. Terama

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

Cym. Yowie Rose ‘Vulcan’ is our Orchid of the Week this week and is a nicely balanced flower and very attractive shade of red. Also having a very big bold lip makes this Cym very appealing. This Cym will definitely stand out amongst your collection and will not go unnoticed! I’ve seen this plant in flower with three full spikes on it and it was pretty impressive!

Cym. Yowie Rose has some good red genes in its background in Cym. Sensation (a previous Orchid of the Week) and it’s parents, and it can be traced back to Cym. Ceres, an important plant in red breeding.

Cym. Yowie Rose was bred by Bryants Orchids who have been responsible for some really great Cymbidiums over the years. They have an excellent track record of hybridising great plants.

Others must think so too as Cym. Yowie Rose has been used as a parent in over 15 registered crosses since! Including Cym. Flaming Vulcan (yet another brilliant Bryants Orchids creation!) which has been a standout and very popular plant.

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum, Cym tracyanum and Cym. lowianum var. kalawense (or i’ansonii), are the major contributors present in the distant background.
