This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Maryse Pujol ‘Woodside’
Parentage: This is a cross between Cym. Ruby Lips × Cym. Kirby Lesh
Registered: 2017
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Our Orchid of the Week this week is a striking piece of breeding that has been awarded by the American Orchid Society.
This week’s cross was made by the late Loren Bachman from Casa de la Orquideas in the U.S. For the exact clonal cross, Cym. Maryse Pujol is Cym. Ruby Lips ‘Harlequin’ X Cym. Kirby Lesh ‘Cinnabar’.
Cym. Kirby Lesh has been a successful parent in a large number of crosses and there are several well known plants in the background including Cym. Vanguard, Cym. Red Beauty and Cym. Tapestry.
Awarded in 2018 by the AOS, it received a High Class Certificate. A very attractive flower and would have been something to see in full flower on the show bench with four spikes and 38 flowers!
The image above was supplied by a member from the Cymbidium Orchid Lovers FaceBook page, and the image on the right was supplied by the registrant who flowered the plant under more light, giving the flower a darker, more saturated colour.
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum, Cym. hookerianum and Cym. eberneum are the major species contributors present in the background.
