This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Forrest Gump ‘High Spirits’
Parentage: This weeks Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Touchstone × Cym. Vogelsang
Registered: 1994
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This week’s Orchid of the Week is an old one, but something for the miniature and intermediate fans. A late flowering, pendulous, cinnamon colour miniature with a labellum that is covered all over with dark red spotting. There is a lot of Cym. Vogelsang in the result here, and the species Cym. devonianum is 50% of both the parents, so no real surprises there. Nicely shaped and proportioned it still has a place in the hobbyist collection.
Long pendulous spikes for this plant hold lots of flowers and is actually quite pretty when multi-spiking with a striking lip that really stands out. A really nice hanging plant to have in the shade house, and one that is compact and doesn’t take up too much space.
Cym. Forrest Gump ‘High Spirits’ is available for purchase from Ezi-Grow Orchids in Western Australia. Ezi-Gro Orchids carry a huge range of Cymbidium orchids and looking through the list will take you some time!
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. devonianum and Cym insigne are the major contributors present in the distant background with Cym. devonianum being a 50% contributor.
