This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Golden Valley ‘Precila’
Parentage: This weeks Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Valley Splash × Cym. Tower of Fire
Registered: 2020
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This week’s Orchid of the Week is a quite recently registered plant from an awesome breeder in the U.S, Weegie Caughlin. Cultivated from a seedling by one of the moderators of the Cymbidium Orchid Lovers Facebook page, who boasts an enviable collection of wonderful plants, the result is eye catching for sure!
Plenty of good breeding shines through, with the parents and all of the grandparents of Cym. Golden Valley being proven performers. You can explore their lineage using the Orchid Roots link below. The grandparents – Cym. Hazel Tyres and Cym. Icho Tower just to name a couple have been very successful over the years. And of the parents, Cym. Valley Splash has garnered exceptionally popularity, earning a Highly Commended Certificate by the Australian Orchid Council. Going back even further in the ancestry tree are some other famous names as well.
The result with Cym. Golden Valley ‘Precila’ has produced a lovely yellow with a very bold lip that contrasts wonderfully. A striking flower with gorgeous petal and sepal markings that i would welcome into my collection without question!
The accompanying image above was sourced from a post on the Cymbidium Orchid Lovers Facebook page. Unfortunately I don’t know where to obtain this plant, but someone in the U.S. will possibly know where to source it. I wish we had it here in Australia!
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum and Cym. hookerianum are the major contributors present in the distant background.
