This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Amigos Sunset ‘Sunny’
Parentage: This weeks Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Marilyn Thomas × Cym. Prized
Registered: 2023
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This week’s Orchid of the Week is new breeding from 3 Amigos Orchids in Adelaide, Australia. On display here at the Orchid Club of South Australia 2024 Winter show, winning the Open Division Best 90mm and over division. A very welcome new colour differing from the normal pinks and reds, and standing out from the pack.
For those that know Cym. Prized, it is quite easy to see the influence it has in this flower. A very wide and rounded lip with a red stripe is a classic Cym. Prized influence.
There are lots of well known plants in the ancestry tree here with the result being a very lovely and appealing rounded apricot colour. I’m keen to see if the 3 Amigos take this one a further step forward and if so, what they beed it with. Next time I see them, I’ll ask them what their plans are!
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum, and Cym. hookerianum are the major contributors present in the distant background.
