This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Cutsie
Parentage: This weeks Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. ensifolium × Cym. Peter Pan
Registered: 1983
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This week’s Orchid of the Week certainly lives up to its name! First registered back in 1983, it’s an oldie, but a plant that I think has a big place in today’s Cymbidium Orchid landscape. People these days seem to be looking for more compact plants and something a little different than the common modern hybrid. And this fits the bill!
Cym. Cutesie is a compact plant that throws small brightly coloured flowers on upright spikes, giving Cym. Cutesie a lot of appeal. Cym. ensifolium has a lot of influence in this spike and flower! A very attractive and different lip (some Cym. Peter Pan influence) sets off a very lovely bloom.
Bred by Everglades, who were responsible for many wonderful plants, did a lot of breeding with Cym. Peter Pan, with 10 registrations using it as a parent. One of which is Cym. Everglades, a plant I own.
With only the one registered progeny, I would love to see Cym. Cutesie used further, and no doubt someone will, giving future generations some warmth tolerance and some very attractive qualities.
If anyone is able to supply this plant in Australia, I’d love to obtain a couple!
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. ensifolium makes up 75% of this plant, with the rest mostly Cym. insigne and Cym. lowianum.
