This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Vivien Hainsworth
Parentage: This week’s Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. J. Davis x Cym. devonianum
Registered: 1982
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
I’m back on the Cym. devonianum progeny train again this week, given it is the time of year most of them have just finished flowering. This time, another lovely cross heavily influenced by Cym. devonianum. I like this plant a lot as it is simply a combination of three species plants. Nice and simple!
Cym. J Davis is a primary hybrid crossing of Cym. insigne x Cym. schroederi registered in 1911. I would dearly love to add this plant to my collection though, to satisfy my primary hybrid obsession!
Cym. Vivien Hainsworth is an ideal plant for those with less space to grow in. A really nice compact plant with upright arching spikes. Flowers are of an intermediate size, being bigger than Cym. devonianum, with a spotted lip that really makes you look!
I’d love to see this plant used further in breeding. Maybe the lip could be transferred to some lighter coloured flowers in the white or yellow shades? I don’t have one of these plants, so that experiment could be just a pipe dream!
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. devonianum accounts for 50% of this plant! The rest (Cym. J Davis) is made up of Cym. insigne and Cym. schroederi.
