This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Etienne Chan Tin

Parentage: This week’s Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Memoria Amelia Earhart x Cym. Tiger Haze
Registered: 2016
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Something a little different this week, from the breeding of Andy Easton…..I spotted this seedling in a friend’s shade house when last in flower in 2024. This was a cascading spike on a fairly compact plant, and still small is size. Intermediate sized flowers make this cross appealing to those with not a lot of space, or hobbyists wanting a lot of different flowers in the space!
Andy Easton has produce a large number of seedling crosses using Cym. Memoria Amelia Earhart and some of the results are very nice indeed.
This seedling is certainly not the best example of the Grex I’ve seen, and certainly not a prizewinner, but as we know, the infinite possibilities with seedlings always produce a vast array of appealing, and not so appealing flowers! Other seedlings of this cross that were also in flower were a little similar to the above. This plant did, however, provide a nice contrast to the other flowering plants around it.

This is one of many many different seedlings to come from this cross. And to yet again illustrate the incredible diversity in seedlings, this one is also Cym. Etienne Chan Tin. This time Cymbidium Etienne Chan Tin ‘Ori Gem’ HCC/AOS in 2016. Taken from the Facebook page of Duy Nguyen, who has some wonderful plants.
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. devonianum, Cym. lowianum and Cym. insigne are the major contributors in the distant background.
