The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

This week, we have a large standard yellow orchid to showcase! This flower is quite big, even when compared to other standards. With its tall, upright spikes featuring a dozen or more bright, well-shaped flowers, this plant truly stands out and demands attention.

This plant was found in the shade house of Western Orchids here in South Australia, in amongst a thousand other plants, in all its glory in 2024. A large, almost specimen sized plant produced five very large spikes of a dozen and more flowers (I can’t recall the total count) on each spike and had such a presence you could see from the other side of the very large shade house!

This plant may not be suitable for those with limited space though!

Its large bulbs and long foliage require plenty of room, making it less than ideal for modern, shrinking backyards. To illustrate this, this particular specimen was in a 400mm pot! Unfortunately, such size also means it is unlikely to attract the attention of breeders. Nevertheless, it’s a flower well worth seeing in person if the opportunity arises.

This plant should probably have been put on the show bench, if only just to show it off for all to see! It really did look that good.

Cym. Kimberley Ingot has some well known plants in the background, such as Cym. Wallara, Cym. San Migel, and Cym. Balkis. All of which have produced terrific offspring.

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum and Cym. eburneum are the major contributors in the distant background.
