Another interesting flower from New Horizon Orchids and Andy Easton this week for our Orchid of the Week. And no prizes for guessing which grandparent plant the labellum markings come from!

Andy Easton always brings something different to the table and here is another one!

Clean greens are not an easy flower to breed, but here is a very smooth consistent green on tall erect spikes that keeps after being cut! It might not be a really bright vibrant green, but the more subtle olive tone makes this flower work for me. Anything brighter would take too much away from the striking labellum markings.

A later season flowering with a high flower count, Cym, Paul Muni has a very unusual lip for a modern day Cym…..and yep, this is inherited from Cym. sanderae, which is one grandparent. One of the other grandparents is Cym. floribundum, which doesn’t hurt either…

Quite unusual to have labellum markings like this on a modern tetraploid but it certainly draws you in and makes you look! And apparently it is a consistent seller in the cut flower market.

Cym. sanderae is an interesting one to breed with and I hope we see some more lip markings like this in modern tetraploid breeding! I might even give it a shot myself as I like both Cym. lowianum and Cym. sanderae quite a lot!

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. sanderae, Cym. floribundum and Cym. lowianum are the major contributors in the distant background.
