This week’s Orchid Wise Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Hazel Dawn ‘Royale’

Parentage: This week’s Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Hazel Fay × Cym. Wallacia
Registered: 2009
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This week I’ve selected a hybrid seen flowering in September 2025 at Wain’s Orchids. It’s always a delight walking into David’s Cymbidium orchid house during the winter and spring, and I try to make it an annual occurrence these days!
Cymbidium Hazel Dawn has some wonderfully colourful varietals. I guess the one most people will know and recognise is ‘Bengal’. But ‘Royale’ is just as colourful, or even more so! A very bright burnt orange stands out in a collection like a firecracker! And that was exactly the case when I was walking through David Wain’s shade house in September! This one stood out right across the way.
Cym. Hazel Dawn has been a favourite with the hobbyists for over a decade and is still available and not hard to find. It still stands proud on the bench during monthly meetings and spring shows and sells fast on the trading tables.
Certainly one you won’t be disappointed in owning, and one others will love to see!
Tracing the plant’s heritage using Orchid Roots, its primary species ancestors are Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum and Cym. eburneum.
