This week’s Orchid Wise Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Hazel Fire ‘Woodside’

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Cym. Hazel Fay has been a terrific parent with a number of lovely plants resulting from it’s use. In fact it has 50 registered progeny! On the other hand, Cym. Tower of Fire, registered by the late Weegie Caughlan, has a number of very interesting plants in the background and is an orange/yellow with a great bold red lip. Together, they have produced a cracking orange colour with really large standard flowers. It might not be the perfect showbench shape, but I think the colour makes up for it.
Bred by Pierre Pujol, a very experienced and talented grower in the United States, the standout of this flower has to be the bold, dark labellum! It is absolutely wonderful! The complete cross of Cym. Hazel Fire is Cym. Hazel Fayre ‘Amber’ x Cym. Tower of Fire ‘Sunset Flames’ and some seedlings, like the one below maintain that wonderful lip colour and also have some flaring too!
If the next generation can maintain the dark bold lip and create a slightly better shape, then we really are onto a winner!
