The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
It’s getting a little old now, but on release, Cym. Icho Tower seemed to be the must have yellow of the year I think! Everyone wanted a piece. And you can find it just about anywhere. But it is a very bright and lovely yellow flower, that’s for sure. Very large flowers on tall upright/gently arching (if not staked) spikes with some lovely bold lip markings made it endlessly appealing to all. I have friends that still grow this plant, and even breed with it, just for a bit of fun. But now having 32 registered progeny, we have a lovely range of new hybrids to work with from this plant.
Bred by the Eric Young Orchid Foundation, a cut flower spike was shown and awarded an Award of Merit at the 1995 Santa Barbara International Orchid Show.
Tracing the plant’s heritage using Orchid Roots, its primary species ancestors are Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum and Cym. hookerianum.
