The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Greens are always a lovely Cymbidium flower and here is an offering from Joe Santy at Santy Orchids in the United States.
Joe has a few different cultivars of Cym. Green River available on the Santy Orchids website and they all have their merits. Both parents are also green so no surprise with the hybrid result here. A nice large standard hobbyist green with upright spikes for some difference in your collection.
My pick of the three cultivars shown here is ‘Lightning’ for the shape and the really dark lip markings, although I have to say, ‘Thunder’ has a great colour and lip that is very striking indeed!
I’d be interested to know if Joe has managed to get a labellum like that on any other plants!
I would also love to see this plant bred back onto Cym. hookerianum or Cym. lowianum or even a good primary hybrid for some interesting results!
