The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Greg Bryant of Bryants Orchids in New South Wales has been hybridising Cymbidium orchids for what feels like forever—and with good reason. Over the years, he has enjoyed remarkable success. In fact, some of the finest Cymbidiums in both Australia and the world have emerged from their shade house. Even I, a specialist in species and primary hybrid diploids, have either owned or currently grow some of Greg’s modern tetraploid hybrids. That says a lot!
Furthermore, Bryants hybrids remain consistently in demand. Fortunately, they are also readily accessible, with Barrita Orchids regularly stocking their latest releases.
As for this particular flower, there’s no mistaking the feature that grabs your attention—the huge, bold, dark red lip. Without a doubt, it’s the focal point of the bloom. While it may not be quite as bright or flashy as some of their other hybrids, I find the more subdued petal colour quite appealing. In fact, the understated tones offer a lovely contrast to the dramatic lip.

Tracing this plant’s original species ancestors using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum and Cym. eburneum are the major species contributors of this plant!
