The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This week, we’re turning our attention to green — and yet another Andy Easton creation. There are so many! What makes this one particularly interesting is a labellum that is a little more unusual than most, though no less eye-catching for it. Rising on an upright spike, the wonderfully rich green intermediate flowers strike a lovely balance, while this time the rich red colouring on the labellum sits framed in a striking light green — a combination that really sets it apart.
Digging into the lineage, Cym. devonianum features heavily in this cross, drawing influence from both sides of the parentage. Furthermore, Cym. Amelia Earhart also adds its influence to the mix. In fact, keen followers will spot quite a few prior Orchids of the Week lurking in the ancestry — always a promising sign!
That depth of lineage does, however, raise an interesting question. Given the strong Cym. devonianum influence running through both sides of the cross, I find myself wondering what the other seedlings in the batch looked like. Specifically, did the devonianum genetics push the spikes toward an arching or even cascading habit in some siblings? It would be fascinating to find out, and it’s exactly that kind of curiosity that makes following a breeder’s work over time so rewarding.
