The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This week brings a brand new 2026 registration. Cym. Jane Goodall takes its name from Dame Valerie Jane Morris Goodall — the world’s preeminent primatologist and anthropologist. And a woman who truly needs no introduction. Goodall was a pioneer in field research on wild chimpanzees that spanned six decades! She lived an extraordinary life and was a pioneer in primate ethology.
The registration itself originates from Santy Orchids in the U.S., the operation of Joe Santy, who specialises in growing exhibition and award quality Cymbidiums in southern California. Interestingly, the cross was named by the Head Gardener and Horticulturist of the British Embassy in Washington DC — a connection that adds a rather charming diplomatic dimension to the story!
As for the flower itself, it may not conform to the ideal modern round tetraploid that judges typically favour on the show bench. Nevertheless, it carries a character entirely its own — much like Goodall herself — and for that reason alone, I think it makes quite the fitting tribute. In particular, a very unique lip shape truly sets this flower apart and elevates the overall presentation. Tall upright spikes carry standard sized flowers.
Looking back through the family tree, we find Cym. Claude Pepper, Cym. Hazel Tyres, and Cym. Valley Splash — all popular and well-bred plants that provide a solid foundation for future development.
Tracing the plant’s heritage, as registered, using Orchid Roots, its primary species ancestors are Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum and Cym. hookerianum.
