The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
New breeding this week from Pierre Pujol in the United States. A really interesting parent combination here, and a very appealing result! I have to admit, I doubt I would have considered making this cross, so I’m glad Pierre has! I do like plants with a strong Australian native Cym influence, and this is one that has benefitted from the Cym. hookerianum paentage.
Compact plants have resulted from the cross with arching spikes holding intermediate sized flowers. The above photo (courtesy of Pierre) is a plant treated with Oryzalin so likely to be a tetraploid, or 4N.
I certainly believe there is some potential here for further breeding, and no doubt Pierre will delight us in a few more years with its progeny!
Tracing the plant’s heritage, as registered, using Orchid Roots, its primary species ancestors are Cym. hookerianum, Cym. canaliculatum and Cym. madidum.
