The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Spotted breeding is nothing new in the Cymbidium world — and yet, this fascinating example proves that point beautifully, despite originating some 35 years ago! Both parents bring serious pedigree to the table. Cym. Piñata and Cym. Solana Beach have each carved out impressive legacies in their own right, and over the years, breeders have returned to both again and again. Not surprisingly, each has delivered some truly lovely progeny along the way.
So what happens when you combine two such proven parents? The answer is Cym. Samurai Hee-Haw! This standard sized flower rises on semi-upright to arching spikes and carries some delightfully spotted markings that immediately catch the eye. Even today, that spotting retains real visual punch, and as a result, this plant would still turn heads in any modern collection.

Tracing the plant’s heritage, as registered, using Orchid Roots, its primary species ancestors are Cym. insigne, Cym. erythrostylum and Cym. lowianum.
