The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This is the last in our series of Cym. Edward Marshall progeny from Sundaani Orchids. This week is another hybrid that has also produced some nice, attractive blooms on upright spikes, and in some lovely colour tones. But I do want to talk about the background to this plant….
I think I’ve banged on about how much I like Cym. Edward Marshall in the past, and how much I like using it for breeding, so this week I’ll get excited about one of Cym. Sundaani Plum’s grandparents……Cym. Mutawa.
Cym. Mutawa was bred by the wonderful Wondabah Orchid Nursery and registered in 1986. Wondabah were the creators of some of the best plants we have from yesteryear! And these include: Cym. Wallamurra, Cym. Culpaulin, Cym. Wallacia, and Cym. Coraki just to name a few! There are literally dozens!
However, back to the hybrid that is Cym. Mutawa, and in it’s background we find really amazing plants like Cym. Lustrous and Cym. Spartan Queen. Combine this with the other grandparent, Cym. Valley Olympic, and it’s no wonder Cym. Sundaani Plum has resulted in a lovely red/pink bloom.
I’d be very interested to see if the judges are interested in this bloom……given it is not the so called perfect round shape, but it would still look lovely in a large display!
Finally, tracing our Orchid of the Week’s heritage through Orchid Roots reveals its primary species ancestors are Cym. insigne, Cym. tracyanum and Cym. hookerianum.
