The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
Of all John Gate’s breeding achievements, this Cymbidium is easily one of my favourites. It is a striking and elegant plant that captures everything we love about the classic Australian hybrid style — strong, balanced, and beautifully shaped.
This hybrid produces a tall, upright spike that carries a generous number of blooms. Each flower is well-proportioned and symmetrical, showing a lovely open form that is never too flat. As a result, the overall display has an impressive sense of balance and presence.
The lip markings on Cym. Amber Rose add another layer of beauty. They create depth and contrast, drawing the eye to the centre of the bloom. Interestingly, the base colour of the lip closely matches the petals and sepals, giving the flower a soft, unified tone that almost appears as a single shade.
When freshly opened, the blooms display a rich, bold orange colour. Over time, the colour fades only slightly, allowing the flowers to remain attractive for weeks. In fact, the bloom shown in this photo had been open for nearly a month — a clear sign of its excellent longevity.
A Flower of Superb Form and Colour
For anyone who may not know his work, John Gate is one of Australia’s most respected Cymbidium breeders. Over many years, he has earned his reputation through dedication, patience, and a deep knowledge of orchid breeding. Because of his skill, his hybrids have become well-known for their quality and reliability.
With decades of experience, John has produced a long list of award-winning Cymbidiums. Many of his creations have impressed judges on the show bench, while others have become favourites in the collections of both hobbyists and serious growers.
It’s quite common to find at least one of his hybrids in almost every Australian collection. John is especially known for breeding from only the finest parent plants, focusing on large, standard-sized Cymbidiums that perform exceptionally well in competitions.
Like many modern hybrids, Cym. Amber Rose has strong ties to the famous Cym. Alexanderi, which makes up about 35% of its ancestry. In addition, other well-known names appear in its background, including Cym. Sensation and Cym. Alnwick Castle. These influential varieties have played a major role in shaping today’s modern standard Cymbidiums.
Overall, this hybrid stands as a wonderful tribute to John Gate’s lifelong passion for Cymbidiums. It reminds us how careful and thoughtful breeding can result in flowers that are both show-quality and easy to grow at home.
