The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

I’m indulging myself this week! As a species Cymbidium lover, this is one of my favourites, and this year, this plant has done itself proud indeed. This one is Cym. mastersii ‘Sam’, and one not often seen at shows or club meetings.

Sitting in the midst of my collection, I didn’t notice the spikes until the buds were forming! It has double spiked from the same bulb with a very nice flower count on each, and a very sweet delicate fragrance is detectable, even though you need to be quite close. I wish you could bottle it!

It performed so well it won both Best Species Cym and Best in Division at the Cymbidium Orchid Club of South Australia this month (May)!

Cym. mastersii has been extensively used in breeding over the years and has been crossed with around 15 other species cyms to create Primary Hybrids. Further information on this unique species can be found here.
