Orchid of the Week

This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Mesmerise ’Looby Loo’

Orchid of the Week - Cym. Mesmerise ‘Looby Loo’
Orchid of the Week – Cym. Mesmerise ‘Looby Loo’

Parentage: This is a cross between Cym. Prized × Cym. Mad Rush

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

Something quite a bit different this time around for our Orchid of the Week! From the breeding of Graham Guest at Guest Orchids in South Australia. Graham has has some outstanding results with his Cyms over the years and this one, grown and photographed by 3 Amigos Orchids, has been an outstanding seedling.

This exact seedling of Cym. Mesmerise has already won Champion awards and has an Award of Distinction from the Australian Orchid Council. This seedling has been mericloned and is available from 3 Amigos Orchids now.

I have Cym. Prized ‘Symbol’ in my collection, pictured below, and combined with Cym. Mad Rush ‘To Nowhere’, also pictured, I guess the Cym. Mesmerise result would be pretty much expected given the parents, however, it delivers for those looking for something out of the ordinary!

It seems Cym. Mad Rush has been quite dominant in the cross but even given the solid eye catching lip the flower colouration and markings really set this one off, and would certainly stand out in your collection. No matter how many weird and wonderful flowers you had!

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, Cym lowianum and Cym. hookerianum are the major contributors present in the distant background.
