This week’s Orchid of the Week is another from the Cym. devonianum line of breeding. A really stunning flower on pendulous/semi pendulous spikes. The lip on this flower is really something!

Really great greens are a little hard to come by, and great pendulous greens even more so, but this one makes my list! It’s a bit of an old plant now, bred by Geyserland Orchids over 40 years ago. On the show bench last month this plant exhibited four awesome flower spikes and was a lovely plant to see. The flowers were nicely shaped, well spaced and open. A decent flower count also made this a popular plant on the night it was shown.

Looking three generations back, on the Cym. High Sierra side, we find Cym. Pauwelsii and Cym. Miretta in the background. Two very well known plants. Clearly Cym. Miretta has provided a nice green in the background.

Although Cym. Jack Hudlow has been used sparingly in breeding since registration, if I ever get my hands on one, I have a few ideas to try!

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. devonianum, Cym. insigne and Cym. lowianum are the major contributors in the distant background.
