This weeks Orchid of the week is… Cym. Robeson Gate ‘Edith’
Parentage: Cymbidium Devil Gate Drive × Cymbidium Paul Robeson
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This Cymbidium seedling is one from my own private collection, and was originally bred by Guest Orchids in Adelaide with pollen provided by Andy Easton of New Horizon Orchids. Unfortunately for Guest Orchids, the breeding result was not what they was looking for commercially, so consequently the line ends here for them. This is the only seedling from this crossing that I have seen, so I’m not aware of what others might look like.
It’s not a show bench orchid or prize winning flower for sure, but the labellum on this flower is a real eye catcher so I grabbed it from a local grower whilst in flower in 2020. This is the second flowering on this plant for me and with permission from Graham Guest at Guest Orchids, registered it after this (above photographed) flowering in 2022.
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, there is a fair bit of Cym. insigne and Cym. lowianum present in the background, as well as some well known, more recent parents.
Below is the flowering from 2020 when it was obtained, albeit in different lighting conditions, but demonstrates it’s consistency.
