This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Last Flight
Parentage: This weeks Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Mem. Amelia Earhart × Cym. Last Tango
Registered: 2011
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
We go back to some Cym. devonianum roots with this week’s Orchid of the Week. It’s mid November and Cym. devonianum and a lot of its progeny either have, or are spiking right now, including Cym. Last Flight. This plant flowered in October here in Australia.
Bred by the brilliance that was Kevin Hipkins at Royale Orchids, this is a cool little cascading Cym that has some wonderful petal markings. And one of the most solid red lips going around.
Cym. Last Flight has Cym. devonianum in both parents, hence the wonderfully cascading spikes. In fact Cym. devonianum makes up 50% of this plant. A fantastically coloured miniature flower contrasts well with the foliage and is a plant I would happily have in my collection. If anyone has a piece they would like to pass on, please get in touch!
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. devonianum, Cym. insigne and Cym. lowianum are the major contributors in the distant background.
