Orchid of the Week

This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Winter Kiss

Orchid of the Week - Winter Kiss 'Pink Lips'
Orchid of the Week – Winter Kiss ‘Pink Lips’

Parentage: This weeks Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Kellys Winter × Cym. Chocolada

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

This week’s Orchid of the Week is from a very reputable breeder in John Gate. John is a very experienced hybridiser and only use the best plants for breeding, so you can be confident this one is a winner! John has been around for a long time and has produced a bunch of very successful and award winning Cymbidiums over the years.

A nice big standard sized Cym. A lovely shade of light green on the petals contrasts well with the pastel pink lip. A flower with a difference.

Cym. Chocolada has Cym. San Miguel and Cym. Sussex Dawn as a set of grandparents and Cym. Kellys Winter has Cym. Winter Wonder as a grandparent, so some good genes there. Cym. Chocolada was a part of my collection in the ’80’s & ’90’s but I have since lost the plant.

Credit for this photo is Sundaani Orchids, who are just 30 mins away from me and have produced some very interesting Cym. hybrids over the last few years, some of which I have in my collection.

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne and Cym lowianum and Cym. hookerianum are the major contributors present in the distant background.
