Orchid Shows – South Coast Orchid Club Winter 2024

South Coast Orchid Club Winter Show – Adelaide, July 2024

The 2024 South Coast Orchid Club of South Australia winter show on 6th July 2024 was a relatively small affair this year, given it fell right in the middle of an early flowering season for the winter species plants and the spring flowering plants. The result meant that a lot of winter species had already finished flowering, however some terrific plants were on show for those that made the effort!

I’m going to let the images do most of the talking here and show you some of the better plants that were on display last weekend.

There were quite a number of different orchid species shown, and some very lovely and impressive specimens, but on this page we are focussed on the Cymbidium Orchid part of the show.

The Cymbidium Orchid section of the show was mostly filled with the mid winter species and near species hybrids, as well as a few mid winter modern hybrids. One of the best was a Cym. tracyanum ‘Tamborine’ with two massive arching spikes, absolutely worthy of it’s prize winning place.

Also in amongst the display was a plant I grew when I was 20 years old – Cym. Gareth ‘Latangor’! I haven’t seen this plant in flower for more than 25 years! This was an impressive flowering, and a great effort by the grower to keep such an old plant disease free after all this time. I believe back in the day, Cym. Gareth ‘Latangor’ was even awarded a Highly Commended Certificate (HCC) by the American Orchid Society!

These were probably the pick of the bunch this weekend, and the show was worth a look. The shows will get larger now for the rest of the year with more modern hybrids coming into flower so I can’t wait to see what there is on offer in the next 3 months!
