This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Layla Emerald

Orchid of the Week - Cym. Layla Emerald
Orchid of the Week – Cym. Layla Emerald

Parentage: This is a cross between Cym. Mighty Mouse × Cym. Miretta

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

Green Cymbidium orchids, for me, are a little difficult to get right. There are plenty out there but a large portion are just a bit ho-hum for me. This one, however, is one I’d like to see in my collection!

This very eye catching Orchid of the Week has a wonderful bold red lip to set off the lovely shade of green in the petals. A more compact standard Cymbidium but no less attractive. Definitely some breeding potential with this one, and I know it has been used in breeding by Royale Orchids, however, there is currently only one registration with it as a parent.

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, and Cym. lowianum are the major contributors present in the distant background with Cym. hookerianum and Cym. erythrostylum being the next largest contributors.
