Orchid of the Week

This weeks Orchid of the week is… Cym. Hazel Tyres

Cym. Hazel Tyres
Cym. Hazel Tyres

Parentage: This is a cross between Cym. Sussex Dawn × Cym. Cariga

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

This week’s Orchid of the Week is a tried and tested performer. A very popular Cymbidium since release and a wonderful attractive white flower with a pinkish blush. It has been around for quite a while but is still a part of many collections and on a multi-spike plant looks absolutely fabulous with that bold red lip.

Cym. Hazel Tyres is also a very good breeder and has produced a number of great progeny. There are currently over 85 registered offspring and of note is one of the parents of Cymbidium Anna Szabo, Cymbidium Memoria Amelia Earhart and Cymbidium Valley Splash.

This image was taken from the OrchidRoots website. Hazel Tyres is still widely available, but you may be able to obtain a piece from Springfield Orchids, or keep an eye on eBay as there is often one up for grabs there!

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots Cym. insigne and Cym. lowianum are the major contributors present in the distant background, with Cym. hookeranium and four other species cyms making up the minor species contributors.
