This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Darch Dots ‘Wild Cat’
Parentage: This is a cross between Cym. Hot ‘n’ Spicy × Cym. Pywacket
Registered: 2007
The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:
This week we head into the world of spots…….lots and lots of spots! This unusual Cymbidium caught my eye whilst looking through what is currently available from Ezi-Grow Orchids.
Some time ago now, Ezi-Grow Orchids in WA started bringing us the Darch Dots crosses, and there are many. Lots and lots of varietals are on offer!
With some time and careful selection, now we are getting some really good ones, including this one – ‘Wild Cat’. There is plenty of the Pywacket and tracyanum influence visible here in what is probably best described as an orange flower. Ezi-Gro suggests this is a mid-season flowerer which could be a good thing depending on your collection. If it’s like mine, there is a bit of a hole mid-season that needs to be filled!
Ezi-Grow Orchids have brought us some wonderful Cymbidiums over the years, and there is plenty on offer from them. Their range is quite enormous, and you will lose an hour looking through them!
The above image was taken from the Ezi-Grow Orchids website and the link to this plant can be found here.
Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym tracyanum, Cym. insigne, and Cym. lowianum are the major contributors present in the distant background.
