The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

Orchid of the Week - Cymbidium Llewellyn Kouba 'Ori Gem'
Orchid of the Week – Cymbidium Llewellyn Kouba ‘Ori Gem’

This week’s Orchid of the Week is the product of new breeding from Andy Easton and New Horizon Orchids.

So if you are looking for long pendulous spikes and small flowers that are pretty spectacular, then Cym. Llewellyn Kouba could be your plant!

The dark lip and amazing patterns on the sepals and petals of this flower is truly one of a kind. Cym. Llewellyn Kouba ‘Ori Gem’ is a seedling from the Cym. Canal Parish × Cym. Magic Devon cross, so not all plants will flower the same. However there are bound to be some crackers in amongst all the seedlings from this cross, and this one is just that! A very dark bold lip like this is certainly hard to ignore!

Grown by Sorella Orchids, this plant won Grand Champion Cymbidium and Best Novelty Cymbidium at the 2024 Santa Barbara Orchid Show and to top that off was the recipient of an Award of Merit by the American Orchid Society.

The accompanying images were sourced from a post on the Cymbidium Orchid Lovers Facebook page. Given it is a recent release, it might not be available everywhere but I’m led to believe Cym. Llewellyn Kouba is available from various suppliers around the world.

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. sanderae, Cym. canaliculatum, Cym. insigne and Cym. devonianum are the major contributors present in the distant background.
