Orchid of the Week

This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Yellow Valley

Parentage: This weeks Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Yellow Zia × Cym. Valley Freestyle

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

This week’s Orchid of the Week is another little self indulgence on my part! And it is included simply for the very strong fragrant properties of this new registration. Unfortunately the photos won’t convey this, but I assure you the perfume on this one fills a room quickly!

I doubt you will see this on the showbench, but bound to be popular with those who love a good strong fragrance.

Bred by Sundaani Orchids in South Australia, just a short drive from where I live, and bred using Cym. Valley Freestyle ‘Heaven Scent’, a well known strongly perfumed Cym. from Valley Orchids, also in South Australia. The pod parent of Cym. Valley Freestyle is Cym. Valley Picture, another perfumed plant that I also have in my collection.

I will admit I don’t know much about Cym. Yellow Zia, however it has Cym. Vanguard and Cym. Peter Pan in it’s background, so a couple of well known names there, and is progeny of another popular worldwide yellow, Cym. Yellow River.

The photos here of Cym. Yellow Valley are of my plant, flowering in 2024, and this is the only plant in existence……a true exclusive! This plant won’t be cloned, however I may break it up in the future, or do some research to see what to breed it with…..

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchidex, Cym. insigne, Cym. lowianum and Cym. hookerianum are the major contributors present in the distant background.
