This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Maclure’s Quest

Orchid of the Week - Cym. Maclure's Quest
Orchid of the Week – Cym. Maclure’s Quest

Parentage: This weeks Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Via Del Playa × Cym. Winter Wonder

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

This week’s Orchid of the Week is a beautiful crisp white…. Without reservation, this is a plant my wife would love to have in the collection, if for nothing else, for beautiful white flowers every year!

Originating from Bryant’s Orchids in 1998, Cym. Maclure’s Quest ‘Starquest’ was subsequently the recipient of an Award of Merit from the Australian Orchid Council in 2013.

Bryant’s Orchids have without a doubt been a very successful breeder in Australia for a long time and combining Cym. Via Del Playa and Cym. Winter Wonder would have been something of a given to try. Both parents have been successful and the result is pretty cool too!

Cym. Winter Wonder has been used extensively in breeding. With over 90 registered progeny. So unsurprisingly, Cym. Maclure’s Quest has subsequently been used as a parent in further breeding too.

Cym. Maclure’s Quest ‘Caroline’ was another cultivar of this crossing in the same fashion, however, it had more pink undertones, and for that reason I prefer ‘Starquest’.

If anyone still has Cym. Maclure’s Quest ‘Starquest’, I bet my wife would buy a piece without reservation! So please get in touch!

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, Cym. erythrostylum, Cym. hookerianum and Cym. lowianum are the major contributors present in the distant background.
