Orchid Wise

Orchid of the Week

This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Yowie Tapestry

Orchid of the Week - Cym. Yowie Tapestry
Orchid of the Week – Cym. Yowie Tapestry

Parentage: This weeks Orchid of the Week is a cross between Cym. Yowie Flame × Cym. Tapestry

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

This week’s Orchid of the Week is an oldie, but one that was striking and in demand when released. A wonderful dark maroon is a colour that is quite desirable, in contrast to the usual reds. They aren’t as common and provide a great contrast to the reds and pinks.

Cym. Yowie Flame is a product of Cym. Tapestry and Cym. Sensation, so a double dose of Cym. Tapestry here. Cym. Yowie Flame has been a really significant red parent, and now has over 120 progeny around the world. If you look at the good reds in Australia today, you’ll find Cym. Yowie Flame in the family tree, almost for certain! Cym. Sensation is also responsible for a huge number of modern reds and is present in the background of so many lovely plants.

We only have three registered progeny from Cym. Yowie Tapestry so far, but with the parents and grandparents it has there is no doubt it will produce some great new generations.

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym. insigne, Cym. erythrostylum, Cym. hookerianum and Cym. lowianum are the major contributors present in the distant background.
