Orchid of the Week

This week’s Orchid of the Week is… Cym. Warringah Winter ‘National Show’

Parentage: This is a cross between Cym. Jessie Blakiston × Cym. Sensation

The reason why it’s our Orchid of the Week:

This week we look at the Champion Small Flower Hybrid Cymbidium from the OSCOV Melbourne Orchid Spectacular in 2023. This award shows that older hybrids, when grown well, are still capable of winning on the show bench. And why you don’t necessarily need to keep up with new breeding if you are happy with what you have.

Again, Cym. Sensation is partly responsible for more outstanding progeny. Cym. Sensation has been a previous Orchid of the Week here at Orchid Wise and with good reason. Read about Cym. Sensation here.

The above image has been borrowed from the 3 Amigo’s Orchids Facebook page and is a a fantastic image of Cym. Warringah Winter ‘National Show’ in full flower, at its best. This has been a very popular dark red Cymbidium for many years and is still readily available around the country.

With its very dark red colour, it is an interesting and contrasting bloom to have in the middle of your collection at flowering time. Absolutely one to consider in compiling a standout Cymbidium orchid collection.

Looking back at the original species ancestors of this plant, using Orchid Roots, Cym insigne and Cym. floribundum are the major contributors present in the distant background, with a measure of Cym. lowianum thrown in too.
